Accessing and contributing to global research: the problem of the last kilometre

This article looks at a pilot project that was set up in 2013 by the UbuntuNet Alliance and INASP to work with National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in order to tackle the problem of the ‘last kilometre’ when accessing and contributing to global research.

Research is a global enterprise that needs everyone, no matter where they are working, to be able to access and contribute to the dialogue. As well as the individual skills of researchers, academics and students, this requires strong enabling institutions, reliable infrastructure, and affordable journals, books and data. It also requires skilled library and ICT professionals.
