Conflict and instability - and resulting factors such as the loss of educated and professional people to other countries - can be damaging to national research systems. To learn more about the real needs of researchers in such countries and how INASP’s different capacity development approaches could be best used in these situations, we carried out pilot projects in two such countries, Sierra Leone (from 2013) and Somalia (from 2015).

The projects provided support with access, research communication, journal publishing and gender equity in higher education. They revealed the importance of understanding context, strong local champions, partnership and convening, and adaptability.
