Summarising Scientific Information, Parliament of Uganda, Uganda, 21-23 June, 2010

Summarising Scientific Information, UgandaThis workshop was intended for members of staff from the Parliament of Uganda. Co-sponsored by INASP and the UK Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST), this workshop focused on the topic of Climate Science. By the end of the two days, the participants had learned more about a scientific topic and acquired transferable skills in summarising. Feedback from participants indicated that these skills will help them to provide concise and easy to understand information to Members of Parliament.

Project planning and project management workshop, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, 12 - 15 October 2009

Project planning workshop, October 2009The increasing 'projectisation' of activities has been a common feature in publicly funded services in recent years and libraries are no exception. Library and information services are increasingly funded from multiple sources, including government budgets, development funding, sponsorship and income generation, which tend to encourage ‘projectisation'. Also, the adoption of strategic management practices is becoming more widespread, particularly among academic libraries, requiring the problem analysis and action planning typical of a project approach to library and information service development.

This four-day workshop, based on  materials first developed by Julie Carpenter for a similar workshop in Ethiopia. Emphasising active participation through group work and discussions, the workshop focused on how to plan robust and achievable projects, and on managing the implementation of those projects in the face of changing external factors and internal constraints. The goal was to help participants understand the general principles and techniques of project planning and management and to apply these to real workplace projects within the library and information field.

The workshop was facilitated by Agnes Namaganda and co-facilitated by Alice Nkhoma-Wamunza (Tanzania) with 2 guest attendance from two senior librarians from the National University of Rwanda Library.
