INASP and Open Access

INASP’s Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information (PERii) aims to support research capacity in developing and emerging countries.  We are always looking for new or innovative ways to best meet the increasing demands and challenges faced in creating, sharing and improving access to information and electronic resources.

The Open Access movement has made a wealth of resources freely available to researchers and information specialists globally. INASP is actively involved in signposting and raising the visibility of this information. We also provide training, support and guidance to local librarians and publishers about the options and opportunities that are available to them. We aim to increase inclusion, and visibility, of developing country research within the Open Access community and hope that by hosting this competition we will further this aim.

Open Access Week is an opportunity to broaden awareness and understanding of Open Access to research, including access policies from all types of research funders, within the international higher education community and the general public. The now-annual event has been expanded from a single day to accommodate widespread global interest in the movement toward open, public access to scholarly research results.

PERii and Open Access

Publishing support & open access
Publication of the latest research information is vital. The Journals Online (JOL) projects offer the opportunity and a platform for editors in developing countries to publish their journals online. Over 80% of the content available on the JOLs is freely available in full-text.

The AuthorAID project supports developing country researchers in publishing and communicating their work. There are over 200 freely available AuthorAID resources in seven languages. An AuthorAID facebook page has been set-up which provides information about all the new volumes of OA journals as they are published, please visit  and add it to your favourites!

Library development & open access
Having the right structures in place to promote and create Open Access repositories is key to access and visibility. PERii offers training in creating open access institutional repositories using DSpace software. We also provide training in open source library management systems, library resource portals and open source Web 2.0 tools to build the infrastructure and support necessary for electronic resources management.

For more information, see our list of institutional repositories.

Information delivery & open access
Raising awareness of the resources available is vital for good usage. In addition to our own materials, PERii maintains and circulates information about complementary programmes, Open Access initiatives, journals and institutional repositories. We also maintain links to Open Access resources and information about the Open Access movement. Please see the list of resources.

The winners will also have the opportunity to share their OA activities via the INASP website, newsletter and network.
