Developing an Information Literacy Programme
This three day workshop aims to provide librarians and information workers with methodologies and techniques to develop an information literacy programme for users or for other librarians and information workers in their institutions.
Learning objectives
- To review existing information skills activities in participant's institutions.
- To introduce participants to concepts of information literacy
- To practise information literacy skills in the electronic environment
- To collaboratively develop strategies for the implementation of information literacy programmes within participants' organisations
Module 1
Objectives
- To differentiate between the terms: library skills bibliographic instruction, user education, information skills and information literacy.
- To define information literacy
- To raise awareness of the importance of information literacy in the information society and in the S. Caucasus region
- To review current IL activities and practice in participant's libraries and institutions
- To inform participants about the current global developments and activities in information literacy
- To suggest some readings
Module 2
Objectives
- To be aware of the some key aspects of teaching information literacy
- To improve the participants own information literacy skills by
- Practising searching and retrieval using a range of electronic databases (e.g. EBSCO, Blackwells and Oxford Journals - if available) and search engines e.g. Google.
- Exploring the Resource Discovery Network Training Suite
- To suggest ideas for the types of materials that can be produced in an information literacy programme
Module 3
Objectives
- To explore information literacy programmes in other libraries
- To consider the first steps involved in setting up an information literacy programme in your library or institution.
