2008

Electronic information and searching skills, Malawi College of Health Sciences. 27-28 November 2008
Sylvester Chawala implemented training sessions for over 200 medical students in order to improve skills on accessing and usage of electronic resources.

Electronic resource information workshop, Mzuzu University Library 18-19 September 2008
Lizzie Malemia of Mzuzu University Library organised and facilitated a training workshop to promote the utilization of e-resources with the assistance of an INASP small grant sponsored by Oxford University Press.  The 24 participants, which included the university faculty and staff, considered the content very relevant to their area of work and appreciated the practical aspects of the training.

Curriculum Development/Review Workshop for the Library and Information Science Programme, Mzuzu University, Kambiri Lodge, Salima, 1 - 5 September, 2008
This workshop was facilitated by Paul Sturges (Loughborough University) and attended by 16 participants, including faculty members and administrators from Mzuzu University, key key members of the Malawian library profession, and two further facilitators Uganda and Zimbabwe.

The course of the workshop was set in two presentations (the LIS Curriculum Design and Development Process, and Reviewing/Developing the LIS Curriculum) to establish principles that could drive the design of a stronger and more up to date curriculum. What emerged from the process was an outline of a better-structured curriculum with IS modules that would accommodate the up-to-date content that successful modern programmes require.

Web Page Design and Authoring, Leading to library Web Pages, University of Malawi, Kamuzu College of Nursing Library, Lilongwe, 22-25 January 2008
Organised by the Malawi Library and Information Consortium (MALICO), this training workshop was attended by 16 participants from amongst the consortium membership.  Lead facilitator was Sydney Ngwira from Mzuzu University and Co-facilitator was Tiwonge Msulira-Banda from the UbuntuNet Alliance for Research and Education Networking. The workshop was presented with the aim of building capacity and enabling use of personally created websites in marketing individual institutions and the e-resources available to them. Participants deemed this a very useful workshop and appreciated the use of practical local website examples.  Requests from participants included provision of an advanced level of this training to further develop the skills acquired.


2007

Bandwidth management and optimisation Linux Essentials Training workshop,  University of Malawi, College of Medicine, 3-7 December, 2007
This technical Linux skills training was provided in response to identified need expressed by the Malawi Research Education Network (Universities of Malawi and Mzuzu).  The workshop aims to contribute to their objectives of improving internet connectivity by enhancing the skills of the technical personnel who participate.  The Network is strategising on low-cost solutions for e-learning, student management systems and see Linux as a core infrastructure for housing free open software.  Participants are now expected to pioneer Linux use in their respective institutions.  The event was facilitated by Mr M Monawe and attended by thirteen participants from the technical support team within the University of Malawi (UNIMA) and Mzuzu University.


Malawi Library Consortium (MALICO), 19-21 September, 2007
The Consortium organised a one day follow up review meeting in May for participants of the 2006 Working together to support research (WTSR) workshop.  The local group of 18 participants attended and they reviewed progress, shared ideas and identified areas for further development.

MALICO also coordinated the workshop entitled Monitoring and Evaluation of E-resource Usage (MEERU) from 19-21 September with 15 participants from 8 institutions in Malawi.  Feedback from this event gave it a 100% rating for content and relevance to work and felt better placed to constructively choose and monitor resources as a result.


ICT training workshop on Web Design and Internet Research at Mzuzu University in Malawi, 2nd 4th May 2007
The Department of Library and Information Science at Mzuzu University held a Web Design and Internet Research Workshop from the 2nd 4th May 2007 in the American Corner Library in Malawi.  Sydney Ngwira was the local event organizer and coordinator, which had 17 participants from tertiary institutions, government departments and non governmental organizations in the Northern Region of Malawi.  Participants found the knowledge gained in both  designing  websites and the ablity to use different internet research strategies very useful and relevant to their work.

Journal sustainability and business operations workshop, Malawi, February 2007.
This workshop took place from the 2nd to 4th February 2007 at Nkopola Lodge, Mangochi, Malawi. It was hosted by the Malawi Medical Journal with support from INASP, WHO Special Program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), Forum for African Medical Editors (FAME) and Africa Health Journals Partnership Project (funded by the US National Institutes of Health with support from the Council of Science Editors).

The objective of this workshop was to assist the participants in evaluating their existing publishing business strategy and to provide a methodology for developing tighter controls and procedures, ultimately improving the sustainability of their journals. Representatives from 11 journals attended and at the end of the workshop each journal had a draft 3-year strategy which the participants took away with them to discuss and implement.

The programme included modules on planning and developing strategy, copyright, promotion and online publishing.
