African Journals OnLine (AJOL)
AJOL is a database of journals published in Africa, covering the full range of academic disciplines. The objective of AJOL is to give greater visibility to the participating journals, and to the research they convey by providing access to tables of contents and abstracts on the Internet, links to full text (if available) plus document delivery of paper articles, which is subsidised to developing countries. Journals are included on the basis of their quality of content and proven record of regular publication.

The African Studies Repository (ASR) makes use of new web tools to develop a space where everyone who works on Africa, both inside and outside the continent, can store their work, access useful resources and make contacts with similar interests. The ASR is a free service, and all unless specified otherwise all our content is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 2.0 UK: England & Wales License.

Bioline International
Bioline International is a not-for-profit electronic publishing service committed to providing access to quality research journals published in developing countries. Explicit goal of reducing the South to North knowledge gap. Publishes in the following areas: health (tropical medicine, infectious diseases, epidemiology, emerging new diseases), biodiversity, the environment, conservation and international development. Features 30 peer-reviewed journals from Brazil, Cuba, India, Indonesia, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Zimbabwe. Many journals are available free of charge. All participants provide their material on an open-access basis.

A national (UK oriented) information service for the higher education community. Excellent for tracking down UK institutions. It also links to over 10,000 quality Internet resources covering all subject areas, and sub-divided by type of resource. Search or browse functions.

Cooperative African Newspapers Project 
A new project to create an electronic database of holdings information for newspapers (all formats and all languages) published in sub-Saharan Africa. Initially it will consolidate holdings information for collections in North America, but will later expand to include holdings of libraries in Africa, Europe, and elsewhere. The project is sponsored by the Africana Librarians Council (ALC) of the [US] African Studies Association, and the Cooperative Africana Microform Project (CAMP) of the Center for Research Libraries (CRL).

Eldis
Eldis is an internet based information service: filtering, structuring and presenting development policy, practice and research information via the web and email. It maintains an ever-growing library of editorially selected and abstracted online documents, and an organisational directory of development-related internet services. Users can browse more than 22,000 summarised documents from over 4,500 development organisations - all available free to download.

Electronic Journals Library
The Electronic Journals Library is a service offered by the University Library of Regensburg to facilitate the use of scholarly journals on the Internet. At the moment, it contains 19540 titles, among them 2195 online-only journals, covering all subjects. 7414 journals can be read free-of-charge.

Electronic Supply of Publications (ESAP)
A project of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP) in cooperation with the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU), the eSAP - project is a collaboration project between universities in the North and the South. It has two clear goals:  To promote the access to the international scientific journals by means of Internet for universities in developing regions and to supply academics in developing regions with the possibility to electronically publish their articles on the Internet.

Google Scholar enables you to search specifically for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research. Use Google Scholar to find articles from a wide variety of academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories and universities, as well as scholarly articles available across the web."

 HighWire Press: Sources of free On-Line full text articles and journals   HighWire Press work with scholarly societies and responsible publishers to host their content online. HighWire contains 1,880,549 free full-text articles as of May 2008. HighWire Press at Stanford University develops and maintains the web versions of important journals in biomedicine and other disciplines. A list of journals with free full-text articles online is available. There is also a list  of  journals published online with the assistance of HighWire Press which offer free online access to current content (not just back issues) to all countries on the World Bank's list of "low income economies". Individual publishers use the list from the World Bank as a guideline for determining their policies, so some variation in access per publisher does occur.

Founded and edited by John Mark Ockerbloom and hosted by the University of Pennsylvania Library, Online Books is a website that facilitates access to 20,000 books that are freely readable over the Internet. It also aims to encourage the development of such online books, for the benefit and edification of all. Users can search and browse by New Listings, Author, Title and Subject.

 Open Science Directory
The Open Science Directory has been developed by EBSCO and the Hasselt University Library based upon a request by marine information management experts collaborating within the framework of the IOC’s (Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO) IODE (International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange) programme. The goal is to create a global search tool for all open access and special programs journal titles. About 13000  journals are now available in the ‘Open Science Directory’.

Portal LivRe!
Nuclear Information Center (Brazil) maintains a portal to ease the identification and access to free journals available on the Internet. It currently has 2,525 free journals. There is a multi-lingual search interface allowing the use of Portuguese, English and Spanish.

Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC)
SPARC is an alliance of academic and research libraries and organisations working to correct market dysfunctions in the scholarly communication system. Developed by Association of Research Libraries (ARL) SPARC serves as a catalyst for change. Its pragmatic focus is to facilitate the emergence of systems that capitalise on the networked environment to disseminate research. Its strategies expand competition and support open access to address the high and rising cost of scholarly journals, especially in science and technology, and medicine – a trend which inhibits the advancement of scholarship.

Survey of Scientific and Technological Information Needs in Less-Developed and Developing Countries
This International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, Section of Science and Technology Libraries Web sitebrings together journal articles, publications, reports, conference proceedings, research, and Web sites on the needs of scientific and technological libraries in less-developed and developing countries. The literature survey includes both the activities of scientific and technological libraries as well as the needs of scientists and technologists and the implication on libraries. Due to its multi-disciplinary nature and the number of publications, this survey cannot include all relevant literature; its aim is to include representative literature covering all pertinent aspects and disciplines. Geographic coverage includes Africa, Asia, and South America. Languages concentrate on the five official IFLA languages: English, French, German, Russian, and Spanish. The literature search focuses on the fields of library and information science, and the subject disciplines of computer science, physics, chemistry, mathematics, astronomy, and geology

 Textbook Revolution
Textbook Revolution is a source for free educational materials. This is a student-run, volunteer-operated website started in response to the textbook industry’s constant drive to maximize profits instead of educational value.  The books are offered for free by their authors/copyright holders, at least to view online. Some of the books have restrictions on printing, sharing and reuse.
