2008

Electronic information and PERii resources user training - ArbaMinch University, 25-28 July 2008
This workshop organised and co-facilitated by Fikre Lemma and facilitated by the PERii Country Coordinator, Wondimeneh Mammo of Addis Ababa University Library, aimed to raise awareness and usage of electronic resources.  Participants mainly from the library community felt confident and capable of sharing new skills with library users and colleagues.

Electronic Resources: Access and utilization, Ethiopian Health & Nutrition Research Institute (ENHRI), 15-17 April 2008
Nineteen ENHRI members participated in this electronic resources workshop facilitated by PERii Country Coordinator and, organised and co-facilitated by Tigist Habtamu of ENHRI.  Feedback was very positive with the need for further events to build on this identified.  Due to the supportive management at ENHRI, facilities and computers together with ICT technical assistance was made available for the duration of the workshop.

Internet Introduction workshop, Mekelle University, Ethiopia, 2008
On 13 April, Mekelle University in Ethiopia held a locally facilitated 3 day Internet Introduction workshop for 14 members of staff representing all 7 faculties of the University.  They had not previously had the opportunity for such training.

Electronic Journals workshop, Internet Introduction workshop, Mekelle University, Ethiopia, 2008
The Internet Introduction event was followed by an Electronic Journals workshop in June, for 24 participants.

Both workshops (Internet Introduction and Electronic Journals) were well received and felt to be highly relevant to the work of the participants.

Electronic journals and management, Adama University, 3-5 January 2008
The fifteen participants from Adama University achieved the intended objectives of identifying and becoming familiar with online electronic resources available and relevant to specific subject areas. Requests have been made to re-run of this event to allow colleagues the opportunity to cover this informative and work relevant content. Organised by Amelework Wube.


2007

Policy development to support Bandwidth Management and Optimisation (BMO), Addis Ababa University, 23-25 June, 2007
This was a follow-up to an earlier BMO workshop in 2006 and aimed to address an identified need to familiarise participants with the process for development of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) Policy.  Participants discussed issues facing Ethiopian institutions and the importance of management involvement in implementation as well as looking at some sample policies.  At the end of the workshop, all were very enthusiastic and keen to help develop their own institutional policies with many aiming to form steering or ICT development committees. 


2006

AJOPP Workshops, 2001 and 2006
To initiate the African Journals Online Publishing Programme (AJOPP), INASP held a workshop in Harare, Zimbabwe in 2001. This workshop invited journals to attend and during the workshop they investigated the potential of online pubilshing and the different hosting opportunities. From this workshop, each journal produced an action plan to help them develop an online presence.

In 2006, editors from six African journals attended a follow-up workshop in Kampala, Uganda to evaluate the African Journals Online Publishing Programme and to look at ways to develop it further. Participants came from Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Uganda to discuss online publishing and to share experiences. Plans were produced for the development of their future online presence.

2005

African University Press Publishing Workshop, 2005
In June 2005 INASP undertook a 6-day workshop at the Addis Ababa University Press, with the objective of developing skills and knowledge within the Press staff, and enabling the management to develop a strategic plan for the Press. The Press was established in 1967 and publishes books from university staff, as well as external authors. This workshop was run with the aim of building a methodology for supporting other university presses throughout Africa to develop their business models and develop more sustainable future operations.

The workshop was facilitated by Helen van Houten, Sioux Cumming, and Eve Gray and attended by participants from the University Press, plus some external observers.

The outcome from the workshop was that a draft strategy plan for the Press was produced, which was to be completed and actioned within the following 12 months.

Reviewing Workshop for Journal Editors, Uganda, 2005
This workshop was held jointly with the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases at WHO (TDR) and the Forum for African Medical Editors (FAME) in Entebbe, Uganda, April, 2005. The objective of the workshop was to develop improved reviewing processes and guidelines for the FAME membership and other medical journals and also included a session on how to provide training to their reviewers. The editorial guidelines which were developed during the workshop can be viewed on the FAME website, here.
