PERii: ICT Training

Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information (PERii)The ICT training component of PERii helps to support the essential role that ICT professionals play in the process of research information production, delivery, access and use. Generally this means working alongside research and education networking (RENs), university campus networks and libraries and information service ICT centres.

These ICT professionals work, often behind the scenes, to provide access to the Internet, functioning websites and online information databases,  and functional, properly maintained and upgraded computers. Without this well functioning infrastructure users and producers of information face insurmountable challenges in accessing information.

INASPs partnerships with these groups currently focuses on :

Bandwidth management and optimisation (BMO)
Working together to provide well managed and optimised internet connectivity for research and education. The particular focus is on the development of supportive institutional and national level policies and their wider environment. PERii also supports innovative approaches to technical skills training and capacity development.

Visit the Bandwidth Management and Optimsation pages for further information.

ICT centres
Working to ensure appropriate hardware and software is available and supported, to enable end users to access and use information. This includes working with libraries to manage and support ICTs in the delivery of their services.

Information systems and online resources training
Working to ensure optimal use of online information systems so that they can be effectively accessed and used for maximum  benefit. A particular focus is working with librarians and researchers to develop a pool of trainers and information intermediaries who can train others in this area.

How we work

The practical elements of these activities are decided in response to requests from partners. Where ever possible we aim to undertake and support activities that are led by partner countries. We also work with various international organisations and experts to supplement these skills sets where appropriate. Practical activities include:

  • Training workshops in both policy and technical ICT subject areas
  • Training workshops to support information systems access and use, in particular training of trainers
  • Advocacy and lobbying to support the wider ICT policy environment
  • Supporting research and education network development
  • Commissioning and undertaking research to support innovation and best practice by research and education networks
  • Peer exchange and study visits by ICT staff

PERii aims to provide a comprehensive training package so that research professionals and the systems they work with support progress towards development goals.
