Income Generation: Experiences from public library systems in Eastern, Central and Southern Africa
Funding is an ever-increasing issue for all libraries - and for public libraries in particular. This issue was raised at the Carnegie Corporation of New York meeting for Grantees from the public library sector in Africa in Boston, August 2001. At this meeting it was requested that a study be published of initiatives in various African countries so that the countries could learn from each other.
This book represents the survey results, and presents initiatives throughout Africa showing how libraries have managed to work within their constitutional and cultural restraints and have implemented different strategies. Many libraries felt that they did not have sufficient activities to respond and it is hoped that the examples in this book will provide a basis for discussion and thought, and so lead to more initiatives in the future.
With contributions from Richard M. Atuti, Marie Dixon, Robin Doust, Ruth Mwayi and Penny Thompson.
