Practical Guide to Bookselling

Français

Booksellers have the ability to nurture a culture of reading within their communities and have always been crucial in ensuring that books reach readers. Within the developing world book publishing is constrained by a number of factors including low literacy and insecure financial structures, and in this environment the role of the bookseller becomes even more important and also more insecure. To survive, booksellers need both traditional bookselling skills and the ability to plan and work within this challenging environment.

This book provides guidance on establishing and running a successful bookselling business, and is designed to be a resource for both existing and new booksellers. It covers subjects such as starting a business, planning the business, managing both stock and staff, and how to develop new strategies for success.

Edited by a publisher (Bridget Impey) and the President of The Pan-African Booksellers Association (PABA) (Oluronke Orimalade), with contributions from booksellers around the continent, the book draws on personal experiences of the Bookselling business, and provides a practical guide to managing survival and success.

The Pan-African Booksellers Association (PABA) was formed to strengthen their sector and to improve access to books in Africa: they encourage booksellers to support local book-development initiatives, and their activities include skills training and supporting new and existing national booksellers' associations.

Publishers

This book was jointly published with the ACP-EU Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Co-operation (CTA), which was established in 1983 under the Lomé convention between the ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific) Group of States and the European Union Member States.

CTA's tasks are to develop and provide services that improve acess to information for agricultural and rural development, and to strengthen the capacity of ACP countries to produce, acquire, exchange and utilise information in this area. CTA's programmes are organised around four principal themes: developing information management and partnership strategies needed for policy formulation and implementation; promoting contact and exchange of experience; developing ACP partners with information on demand; and strengthening their information and communication capacities.
