Promotion of Information Literacy in the South Caucasus
The UNESCO Information for All Programme (IFAP) funded a series of information literacy workshops held in the three Caucasus Research Resource Centers (CRRC) in Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia during February, March and April 2006, facilitated by INASP. The CRRC is a joint regional programme of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Eurasia Foundation and local universities which offers scholars and practitioners stable opportunities for integrated research, training and collaboration.
The workshops brought together 44 librarians and information workers from 27 libraries and institutions to discuss and develop ways of implementing information literacy programmes for other librarians and users, in their libraries and their institutions.
Aims and objectives
The overall objective was to strengthen the promotion of information literacy and information dissemination in the S. Caucasus region.
The key objectives of the workshop were:
- To review existing information skills activities in participants' institutions.
- To introduce participants to concepts of information literacy.
- To practice information literacy skills in the electronic environment.
- To collaboratively develop strategies for the implementation of information literacy programmes within participants' organisations.
Outcomes
At the end of the workshops, participants should have:
- been introduced to the concept of information literacy,
- an understanding of why information literacy is important in today's information society,
- been introduced to a range of information literacy models,
- reviewed information literacy standards, performance indicators and outcomes,
- practiced key components of information literacy practical skills,
- evaluated information resources,
- considered appropriate best practice of information literacy within their working environments,
- developed a range of implementation strategies, and
- discussed collaborative information literacy implementation strategies.

The ILRD is a web directory designed by the Information Section of IFLA, a UNESCO funded project. The aim of the directory is to enable sharing of information literacy experiences around the world.
