2008

Electronic Resources: Health information forum and workshop, Association for Health Information and Libraries in Africa, Kenya Chapter (Ken-Ahila), Nairobi University,  18-19 November 2008
Ken-AHILA was awarded an INASP small grant to enable implementation of  training in various areas that affect health information providers.  The training was done in collaboration with Partnerships in Health Information (PHI) to maximise the programme's impact. PHI provided materials and the programme included:

  • Skills and knowledge of health information providers in the electronic era
  • Introduction to Evidence Based Medicine
  • Website Evaluation
  • Website content and promotion
  • Identifying/ evaluating appropriate health information resources
  • Marketing library services: marketing audit

Participants (23 attended from health institutions nationally) were pleased with the outcome and relevance to their work.  The event also helped with identification of areas for improvement such as development of websites to further support their work and reach.  The local organizer and Chair of KenAHILA, Nancy Kamau, appreciated the impact of this type of event and participants were urged to pass on the knowledge gained to colleagues.

Enhancing access of PERI resources at Egerton University, 14 October-18 November 2008
A series of training workshops, supported with award of an INASP small grant,  has been organised and facilitated by two members of Egerton University staff - Nerisa Kamar and James Muthee.  The value of training to improve access and usage of electronic resources throughout their campuses is recognised by senior staff at Egerton and promoted by the local PERii Coordinating team.  The following is the schedule for this series of 6 x 2 day events: 

  • Njoro Gp1 14th & 15th October
  • Njoro Gp2 16th & 17th October
  • Laikipia 21st & 22nd October
  • Kisii 24th & 25th October
  • Town Campus 11th & 12th November
  • Chuka 17th & 18th November

Following completion of training it is expected that library staff will have improved and enhanced search & dissemination skills and that lecturers and researchers will effectively utilize the resources to complement research and teaching within their respective departments. 

Bandwidth management and optimisation university and research libraries briefing,  Nairobi 14 July 2008
A one day seminar organised by the library consortia and KENET (the Kenyan NREN) was facilitated by Martin Belcher from INASP. The non-technical content focused on bandwidth management and optimisation and what libraries need to know in this area. The participants included a potential future trainer from the local NREN and also from the library community. This will enable similar events to be repeated within their own communities and also in other INASP partner countries. Requests received to "include bandwidth management and optimisation in our user education programme" and the content was seen as "very useful.  Especially the strategic decisions regarding the bandwidth management".

The Bandwidth Management and Optimisation Strategic Planning Workshop,  Nairobi 29-30 April 2008
A two-day participatory planning and review workshop was run in conjunction with KENET (the Kenyan NREN) involving selected professionals working in the areas of bandwidth management at African universities, Research and Education Network (REN) development and invited experts. Fifteen people took part in the workshop from 9 countries - Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and the UK.  The event resulted in recommendations and selection of activities to carry forward the identified objectives of fostering progress in the area of bandwidth management.  These will be presented to various stakeholders and funders for implementation. Kenya Library and Information Services Consortium (KLISC) organised a number of training activities during 2007, including the following three ICT training workshops:


2007

Policy development to support bandwidth management and optimisation, University of Nairobi, 17-19 July 2007
INASP and TENET assisted with the provision of this KENET led policy development workshop to support effective Bandwidth Management and Optimisation (BMO) within the University environment in Kenya. Participants with responsibility for policy related work from the KENET membership focused on addressing key issues of bandwidth management and optimisation at an institutional level.

Monitoring and evaluating the use of e-resources (MEERU), Kenya, 31 July 2 August, 2007
This was the second of the MEERU workshops which Kenya have hosted and enabled training of a further twenty-two participants from institutions throughout the country.  The facilitator, Mary Materu-Behitsa from the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania  was assisted by the local Kenya PERI Country Coordinator, Jacinta Were.  Participants appreciated the skills acquired and felt they were now in a better position to effectively monitor and evaluate their individual institutional e-resources.

Web Design and Development, University of Nairobi, Kenya, 16-18 July, 2007
This workshop focused on the creation of web pages using a number of different techniques.  The sixteen participants were introduced to a range of web page authoring tools and their effective use by the facilitators Washington Gachira (United States International University) and Evans Njoroge (Kabarak University).

Electronic journals and electronic resources library management (EJs), University of Nairobi, Kenya, 27-29 June, 2007
Jane Gikandi (Kenyatta University) and  Rose Njoroge (Catholic Uni. of Eastern Africa) facilitated this ICT training workshop on access and usage of e-resources.  Sixteen participants from 14 KLISC member institutions attended and the workshop content was considered very practical and useful.
