PERI: Strengthening National Research Publications

peri logo As part of the Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information, INASP undertakes activities to support national scholarly publishing structures, working with publishers, editors, librarians, authors and other organisations to identify ways of improving the publication of their research through national journals. INASP also undertakes training of editors and publishers in publishing methodology, to familiarise them with the developments in scholarly communication within their own regions and worldwide, as well as how to make best use of ICTs (Information and Communication Technologies) to disseminate their research findings.

Activities include the development of Journals OnLine systems to publish journals online (see www.ajol.info and INASP's Journals OnLine) and training workshops - see publishing workshops under Events.

The goals of this component are as follows:

To increase dissemination opportunities for nationally produced information.
To enhance sustainable access to the nationally produced research information.
To ensure the provision of training and skill sharing to enhance editing, publishing, production and distribution skills.
To ensure the improvement in quality of national publications.

Journal Sustainability and Business Operations Workshop, Malawi, 2007 This workshop was organised in collaboration with the Malawi Medical Journal, WHO special program for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), Forum for African Medical Editors (FAME) and Africa Health Journals Partnership Project (funded by the US National Institutes of Health with support from the Council of Science Editors).

WALISJE Publishing Workshops INASP has supported the West African Library Information Science Journal Editors Association to run several publishing workshops between 2002-2005

Infobrief 4 — PERI Review 2001-2004: Executive Summary The Programme for the Enhancement of Research Information (PERI) has been operational since 2002 and this review has been undertaken to document and assess progress towards its goals and objectives.

Infobrief 7 — Open Access survey of Africa-published journals A survey of African journal editors was undertaken in 2005 to ascertain their awareness and understanding of the Open Access movement, and to discover if their journals would be willing to publish Open Access. (2006)
