CLACSO Digital Library Support
CLACSO is an academic research network in Latin America and the Caribbean created in 1967 to promote social science research and teaching, strengthen cooperation among institutions and researchers within the region and with other regions and contribute to the debate within governments about policies for a better governance in our societies. The CLACSO network has 168 social science research and teaching institutions from 21 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Since 2004 INASP has supported CLACSO to include members' journals within their digital library. This has involved several different activities to increase awareness of online publishing; to introduce members to the CLACSO software and methodology; and training in how to publish and use the digital library to increase the visibility of the journals.
The objective of this support was to increase the visibility and access to social science journals published by members of the CLACSO network. Activities included workshops for editors and librarians and support for digitising content. The outcome from the project has been a great increase in the number of journals participating in the digital library - it now hosts over 50 journals from CLACSO members (Open Access), and there are over 10 portals in 8 countries.
From this project two reference books have been published by CLACSO: Edición Electrónica, Bibliotecas Virtuales y Portales para las Ciencias Sociales en América Latina y el Caribe (2006), and Bibliotecas Virtuales Para las Ciencias Sociales (2005), both Edited by Dominique Babini and Jorge Fraga and published by CLACSO Libros, Argentina.
