Availability and access to research publications

Availability and access to research information and knowledge is essential for any strong research and knowledge system.

Information published outside developing countries

We negotiate with publishers across many disciplines to provide researchers and libraries in developing countries with the journals, books and databases that they need at affordable prices.

We also work with universities, research organisations and their associated library consortia to help them build their own negotiation and licensing skills. The resources offered include both subscription-based and open access titles.

Availability of research literature is only the start. An important part of our work is building the skills of librarians, ICT professionals and researchers themselves to make the best use of the resources provided.

Information published within developing countries

There is an enormous amount of research being produced in developing countries — much of which addresses or relates to the key development issues they face. We work with journal editors and publishers to help maximise the impact and dissemination of this work. The Journals Online systems (JOLs) provide online publication and indexing of significant collections of scientific journals, either on a national or regional basis. We also encourage the development and registration of institutional repositories.
