International Symposium 2016, Accra: Approaches to Capacity Building for Evidence-Informed Policy Making

35 researchers, practitioners and policymakers from 12 countries are meeting in Accra, Ghana on 5-6 October 2016 to discuss approaches to capacity building for evidence-informed policy making (EIPM).

The symposium ‘Approaches to Capacity Building for EIPM: VakaYiko Symposium 2016’ comprises eight sessions in which the speakers will share experiences, challenges and solutions to building capacity for evidence-informed policy making. Session topics include:

  • Taking a Systemic Approach to Getting Knowledge into Policy
  • Approaches to Building Networks for Evidence Use: Public Engagement and Co-Creation
  • Evidence Informed Scrutiny in Parliaments
  • Approaches to Training for Evidence-Informed Policy Making
  • Contextual Factors Affecting the Use of Evidence in Policy.

The symposium marks the end of a three-year project VakaYiko, working in Ghana, Uganda, South Africa and Zimbabwe to build capacity to use research evidence in policy making. It brings together a broad array of stakeholders, including VakaYiko partners, government ministries, NGOs, think tanks and thought leaders to review current best practices and to demonstrate new and innovative approaches to evidence-informed policy making.

  • Enrique Mendizabal, Peruvian Alliance for Useful Evidence
  • George Amoah, Civil Society Training Centre, Ghana
  • John Bagonza, Parliament of Uganda Department of Research Services
  • Julius Debrah, Ghana Presidency
  • Leandro Echt, Politics and Ideas, Latin America
  • Mapula Tshangela, Department of Environmental Affairs, South Africa
  • Mohammed Nyagsi, Parliament of Ghana Research Department
  • Stephen Baguma, Uganda National Academy of Sciences

The Symposium will conclude with a public forum held on the last day (6 October 2016) with a special focus on evidence-informed policy making in Ghana. It will be hosted by the Ghana Information Network for Knowledge Sharing (GINKS). The forum will explore opportunities for improving evidence use in Ghana’s policy making processes and promote networking among different stakeholders.

The ‘Approaches to Capacity Building for Evidence-Informed Policy Making’ Symposium will take place on 5-6 October 2016 at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra, Ghana. The public event: ‘National Stakeholder Forum on Evidence Informed Policy Making in Ghana’ will take place on 6 October 2016, 16.00-17.30. The public event is free to attend.
